4 Hot NYC Valentines Day Food Trends to Try

4 Hot NYC Valentines Day Food Trends to Try

For some, Valentine’s Day is the ultimate celebration of love. And for most, celebrating love’s biggest day starts in grade school— by handing out personalized Valentines to the rest of your class with the hopes of receiving one from your crush. Things haven’t really changed that much since grade school when it comes to celebrating Valentine’s Day .... except maybe your dinner menu. While we may not admit it, at some point, we all want to be someone’s Valentine. But whether that person is your spouse, best friend or pet doesn’t really matter! The great thing about Valentine’s Day and celebrating love in general is that the love itself doesn’t have to be romantic. In fact, whether you’re attached, single or just a self-proclaimed crazy cat lady, Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to cook up some decadent food for yourself or a loved one. Read on to find out how Deborah Miller Catering can help jazz up your 2016 Valentine’s Day plans or how to create your own non-cheesy V-Day tradition. (Although it will include cheese).

Pink (Spicy) Drinks

What’s better than a pink drink on Valentine’s Day? Our answer? One that has some bite! We’ve found these spicy grapefruit margaritas with a chili-salt rim to be a hit while catering at past NYC weddings and it’s too good not to share with our readers. Sweet and spicy, yet totally refreshing, this fun cocktail will deliver just enough kick for you and your V-day sweetie. What you’ll need: 2 ounces of fresh lime juice (or about 2 large limes, juiced), 2 teaspoons of light agave nectar, one thinly sliced jalapeño round, 4 ounces of grapefruit juice (or about one large grapefruit, juiced), and 3 ounces of tequila (We recommend Blanco/Silver or Reposado tequila). For the chili-salt rim, all you’ll need is kosher salt, regular chili powder, lime wedges, and small grapefruit wedge for a fun garnish at the end. To prepare your glasses, mix your salt and chili powder together on a small plate and run your lime wedge around the rim of your glass so that the salt sticks. Next, use a cocktail shaker and add the lime juice, agave nectar and jalapeño slice. If you have one, use a muddler to crush the jalapeño into your drink. Finally, pour in the grapefruit juice and tequila, and top off the shaker with ice. Shake, strain and serve! (With your grapefruit garnish of course). Cheers!

A Romantic Comfort Food Fete

Attached but stuck in a V-Day rut? Have no fear! We’ve got you covered. While cooking or preparing food can be a romantic date in-and-of itself, for some, entering the kitchen is like stepping into the danger zone. Whether it be for weddings, a major milestone celebration or just trying to spruce up your regular date night, it can feel overwhelming to think of the “perfect” menu and there’s no denying the added pressure to live up to you or your partner’s culinary expectations. Fancy dinners are fun— don’t get us wrong, but there’s something more organically charming in taking the comfort food route. There’s something to be said about enjoying a romantic home cooked meal away from the crowds in the comfort in your own home. Plus, if you’re like us and have been binge-watching the latest hit Netflix show and are scared to learn spoilers, play it safe and stay inside! Trust us...it’s too cold out there anyways! At the end of the day, even if you happen to have luke-warm feelings for Valentine’s Day itself, this decadent, but easy to cook recipe is so delish, you’ll fall in love with it. For dinner, filet mignon is a culinary fan-favorite that is both easy to cook and decadent. Not only is the cut tender & juicy but you can mix up the flavor by pairing the meat with a savory side and/or sauce. We love pairing our steaks with a classic garlic herb butter and also recommend a blue-cheese or chipotle spiced butter for those who enjoy more of a kick. Since most of us are still in the depths of winter, it may not be an ideal time to grill. Broiling the filets are just as tasty and require little prep work depending on how thick the cut is. Simply preheat the broiler, season steaks with salt & pepper and place on a foiled broiler pan. For a 1-inch filet cut, broil 12 to 14 minutes for medium. For a 1-1/2-inch filet cut, broil 18 to 20 minutes for medium rare or 22 to 24 minutes for medium. As the meat is broiling, make sure to also turn the cuts once halfway through the broiling time. Once the meat is finished, transfer the filets to a platter and cover with foil. Allow to stand for 8 minutes before serving. For the garlic herb butter, simply beat 1⁄2 cup of softened butter, 1 teaspoon minced garlic, 2 teaspoons of thyme, and 2 teaspoons oregano with an electric mixer until combined. Let chill anywhere from 1-24 hours. For a scrumptious Valentine's Day side, nothing says I love you more than truffle mashed potatoes. Definitely better than flowers, right? All you’ll need is one pound of russet potatoes, one pint of half and half, a package of butter and truffle cheese. To start, peel and quarter the potatoes in a pot of water for a half hour and then drain. Next, add 2/3 cup of half-and-half and 4 tablespoons of butter in the pot. Finally, add the potatoes and mash ‘em up! If this seems like a monotonous task, challenge your partner to a mash-up and see who’s better at mashing the potatoes. But, be warned: things can get heated in the kitchen! As you mash, stir in 1⁄2 cup of grated truffle cheese, and season with salt and pepper. Cover and let sit for about five minutes and then serve and enjoy!

Make Your Own Pizza Bar

Remember! Valentine’s Day is not just for couples, For an equally-decadent single friends dinner, pull a Beyoncé (first make sure to blast “All the Single Ladies!”) and call the rest of your friends for a V-day pizza party. (For the record, I think we can all agree that love definitely equals pizza). For a little twist on the classic pizza party, spruce things up by making your own personal pie at your “pizza bar,” complete with a fun assortment of classic and new toppings. If you really feel like having fun, instead of buying pre-made dough at the market, make your own and shape your pie into a heart. Regardless of what you choose to do, a make- your-own pizza bar is a great way to play with different flavors, make cooking interactive with your guests and create a low-stress environment for the host. Simply put: it’s a great way to entertain your friends. If you decide to take the homemade route, all you’ll need are four simple ingredients: 2 packets of active dry yeast, 2 tablespoons sugar, 1/4 cup olive oil, 2 teaspoons of salt and 4 cups all-purpose flour. Pour 1 1/2 cups warm water into a large bowl and sprinkle with yeast and let stand for about 5 minutes. Then, whisk the sugar, oil, and salt into yeast mixture. Then, add your flour and stir until a sticky dough forms. Transfer dough to an oiled bowl and brush top with oil. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and set aside for one hour. While the pizza dough is rising, crank up your favorite single tunes or watch a classic rom-com on the tube. (Mystic Pizza, anyone)? Once the dough is ready, make sure to pour some flour onto your surface and knead it a few times before decorating your pizza! If you’re in a time crunch and buy pre-made dough, virtually every and any market carries packages of dough so you’ll have no problem getting everything ready. Now comes the fun part: toppings. The main takeaway point with a pizza bar is to provide toppings that all work well together, so that your friends can have fun playing around with all their options. Keep in mind different kinds of pizzas (i.e.: Hawaiian, meat lovers, veggie lovers, etc.). We recommend mozzarella cheese, sausage, pepperoni, pineapple, artichoke hearts, green peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes, chicken, ham, bacon, onions and arugula. Obviously you can add more or less depending on how many people you’re having over but these toppings are always a crowd pleaser. Pair all this yumminess with some Bubbly Champagne again or go for a tried and true Valentine’s pink drink, the Cosmo!

Molten Lava Mug Cakes: Somethin’ Sweet for Everyone

For a little something sweet, nothing is hotter (literally) than mug desserts. Simple, easy, yet totally delectable, mug desserts are the perfect sweet side the accompany your V-day soiree, regardless of your romantic status. In keeping with our decadent theme, we suggest molten lava mug cakes. As an added bonus, these babies are also eggless, so there’s virtually no mess and no baking required. To start: in a 12-ounce coffee mug, add water, oil and vanilla and make sure to whisk well. Then add your cocoa powder and sugar, continuing to whisk. Lastly add your flour and microwave for 60 to 90 seconds. Remember: the center should be slightly molten, but be careful not to overcook! From all of us here at Deborah Miller, we wish you a happy Valentine's Day and hope that you’ll be our Valentine this year—and take part in our love of sugar on this sweet day! Check out the blog next week when we showcase some yummy winter food ideas and how to make this your best winter cooking season ever!
