Thanksgiving’s Perfect Pair: Mulled Cider & Pumpkin Pie

As we head into the holiday homestretch we wanted to share with you some signature Thanksgiving staples.

First, welcome your guests with the aromas of fall with a warm Mulled Cider.

Hot cider with spicy seasonings and citrus fruits

  • 1 gal. apple cider
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tsp. whole allspice
  • 2 whole star anise (optional)
  • 1 tsp. whole cloves
  • 1 navel orange thinly sliced
  • Combine all ingredients in a large sauce pan over, bring to a simmer
  • Pour into individual mugs and garnish with a cinnamon stick and orange slice

Second, we have our traditional pumpkin pie, made with real roasted pumpkin and wrapped in our Test Kitchen Orange Ginger Pie Crust.

Pumpkin Pie Filling

We're going to roast some pumpkins

  • Preheat your oven to 435 F
  • You’ll need about 4 lbs of pumpkins. Small ones are about 1.5-2 lbs so 2 cantaloupe sized pumpkins should work
  • Cut them in half, very carefully (For your safety)Halved Pumpkins
  • Scoop out the seeds (save them for roasting)
  • Apply a little bit of kosher salt to each half, pinches
  • Turn them face down on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil
  • Rub a very little bit of coconut oil on the outsides
  • Roast at 400 F  for 30-40 minutes or until your fork can slide right through the skin
  • Let cool for about an hour

  • Once you can handle them take a spoon and start digging
  • Place the pumpkin in a food processor pulsing every now and then
  • Once all four halves are scrapped out, puree until blended with little chunks
  • Transfer from the Food Processor into a larger bowl
  • Add one can of sweetened condensed milk
  • Beat in two large eggs
  • Mix in ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, ¼ teaspoon almond extract, ½ teaspoon of salt
  • 2 teaspoons Pumpkin Pie Spice (which is a combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and ground ginger. Add a pinch more if one if you prefer)
  • Mix everything together with a whisk until smooth
  • Pour mixture into pie crust
  • Heat at 425 F for 15 min then reduce to 325F for 30-40 min
